Zodiac returning to the Odyssey

Inian Islands Alaska

🌊 A Peaceful Day Among the Inian Islands

One of the most relaxing and memorable days of our cruise was spent among the Inian Islands, where our ship quietly settled into a protected cove surrounded by pristine wilderness.

With calm water, towering forested shores, and wildlife all around, it felt like we had arrived in a hidden corner of Alaska — far removed from busy ports and crowds.

It was a day designed for slowing down and simply enjoying where we were.

We began the morning with a leisurely breakfast in the Atrium Lounge at the stern of the ship. Sitting outside, warmed by the sun and the gentle glow of the heat lamps, all four of us took in the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounded us — quiet water, forested shorelines, and distant mountains framed by soft morning light.

As if the moment needed anything more, a pod of whales surfaced just off the stern, lazily feeding and moving through the water. They seemed completely unbothered by our presence, putting on a quiet, graceful show as we sipped our coffee and watched in awe.

It was one of those rare travel moments when everything comes together — no schedule, no rushing, just perfect timing and pure appreciation for where we were.

With that peaceful start, the rest of the day unfolded at an equally relaxed pace, setting the tone for our kayaking and RIB boat adventures among the Inian Islands.

The Odyssey entering Misty Fjords

🛶🚤 Kayaking & RIB Boat Adventures

After such a peaceful start to the morning, we were more than ready to head out and explore the surrounding waters.

The Venture Team was already waiting on deck with kayaks and RIB boats prepared, offering two different ways to experience the Inian Islands up close. We split up for a bit — I chose to kayak quietly across the calm surface, while the Mary and Gary opted for a guided RIB boat tour that would cover more distance along the rugged shoreline.

Both choices turned out to be perfect.

From the kayak, the world felt intimate and quiet. With each gentle stroke, the water rippled softly beneath the paddle, and the surrounding mountains and forests reflected like glass. It was peaceful, almost meditative, and made it easy to lose track of time. The mist hung low on the mountains giving the area and ethereal feel.

Meanwhile, the RIB boat offered a broader view of the region, weaving through channels and hugging rocky outcrops. With the guidance of the Venture Team, it provided opportunities to spot wildlife and learn more about the landscape as it unfolded around them. harbor seals, otters and eagles were spotted.

Finally, near the end our our explorations, the pod of whales returned and surfaced again.

No engines were revving.
No one was shouting.
Everyone simply paused and watched.

It was a shared moment of awe — calm, respectful, and deeply moving.

Our guides kept a careful distance, allowing the whales to move freely while ensuring we had unobstructed views. Their professionalism and respect for the environment made the experience even more meaningful.

By the time we returned to the ship, we were relaxed, energized, and quietly amazed by what we had just experienced — grateful for a day that unfolded so naturally and beautifully.

🎓🦅 Learning with the Venture Team

Between excursions, the Venture Team continued to add depth to the experience with engaging onboard lectures.

That day, we especially enjoyed sessions focused on:

  • Alaska’s ecosystems and geography
  • The behavior and habitat of the American bald eagle
  • Wildlife conservation in Southeast Alaska

These talks helped us better understand what we were seeing — from the whales in the water to the eagles soaring overhead — and made the experience even more meaningful.

🌟 Why the Inian Islands Were So Special

Our day in the Inian Islands captured everything we love about expedition-style cruising.

It was:

  • Adventurous without being strenuous
  • Educational without being heavy
  • Peaceful without being boring
  • Immersive without being overwhelming

Between kayaking, RIB excursions, whale sightings, and thoughtful lectures, it was the perfect balance of exploration and relaxation. It remains one of the most serene and rewarding days of our entire Alaska journey — a reminder that sometimes the most powerful travel moments happen when you simply slow down and let nature lead.

Alaska Inside Passage Sea Days

Every day of this cruise felt magical. The hype surrounding “Alaskan cruises” is truly justified. Our experience was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, set against some of the world’s most inspiring scenery and extraordinary wildlife.

Even our sea days, though more laid-back, were deeply rewarding. They gave us time to slow down, learn from the Venture Team’s outstanding lectures, and then head back out to experience Alaska’s natural beauty firsthand.

It’s easy to understand why so many people return from Alaska eager to share their stories. We felt incredibly fortunate to experience it aboard a smaller, more intimate ship, where the captain and crew took such exceptional care of us every step of the way.

We often found ourselves feeling grateful that we weren’t on one of the larger ships — where long lines, crowded spaces, and missed opportunities can take away from the magic. Instead, we enjoyed closer access to nature, more personal service, and a deeper connection to each destination.

If Seabourn isn’t an option, we strongly recommend seeking out a smaller, all-inclusive cruise line for your Alaska journey. Experiencing this remarkable place in a more intimate setting truly makes all the difference.

Together, our time cruising Misty Fjords National Monument, sailing through Queen Charlotte Sound, Kayaking in Hubbard’s Bay, and relaxing among the Inian Islands formed the heart of our Alaska journey — three unforgettable days that defined the spirit of our Seabourn cruise.
