🌊 A Scenic Escape from the Vineyards
One of the wonderful things about staying in Santa Rosa during our Sonoma wine country trip was how close we were to the dramatic Pacific coastline. After a couple of days exploring vineyards, we decided it was time for a change of scenery and set out for a coastal drive toward Jenner and Fort Ross.
Sonoma County is famous for its wineries, but the rugged Sonoma Coast is equally spectacular. Just an hour’s drive west from Santa Rosa, rolling vineyards give way to towering redwoods, twisting roads, and finally the wide-open views of the Pacific Ocean.
Our destination for the day would include the small coastal town of Jenner, a drive north along the coastline, and a visit to historic Fort Ross State Historic Park.
🚗 The Beautiful Drive to Jenner
Leaving Santa Rosa, we followed River Road west toward the coast. This scenic route winds along the Russian River, passing through towering redwood forests and charming small towns along the way.
The landscape gradually changes as you approach the ocean. Vineyards give way to dense forests, and then suddenly the road opens up to breathtaking views where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean.
That meeting point is the tiny village of Jenner. Perched on cliffs overlooking the river mouth, Jenner feels worlds away from the busy wine tasting rooms we had been visiting earlier in the week.
We pulled over at one of the scenic overlooks and spent a few minutes simply soaking in the view — waves crashing along the rugged shoreline and seabirds gliding over the water.
🏛 Visiting Fort Ross
From Jenner we continued north along the famous California State Route 1, one of the most scenic coastal drives anywhere in the country.
Our destination was Fort Ross, a historic Russian settlement established in 1812. Long before California became part of the United States, this remote outpost served as a Russian trading colony supplying agricultural products and furs to Russian Alaska.
Today Fort Ross State Historic Park preserves the original layout of the settlement with reconstructed buildings including:
- The stockade walls
- A Russian Orthodox chapel
- Officers’ quarters
- Artisan workshops
- Coastal lookout points
Walking through the fort offers a fascinating glimpse into a lesser-known chapter of California history. The setting itself is stunning — perched on cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean with sweeping views up and down the coastline.
It’s a peaceful place that feels far removed from the busier parts of Sonoma County.

🍽 Lunch Along the Sonoma Coast
After exploring the fort, it was time for one of the highlights of the day — lunch overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Rivers End Restaurant – A must stop on any trip in the area.
The Sonoma Coast is dotted with small cafés and seafood restaurants where you can relax and enjoy fresh local cuisine while watching the waves roll in. The slower pace of life here perfectly matched the laid-back atmosphere of our day along the coast.
Sitting with good friends, enjoying great food and a glass of wine while looking out over the ocean, reminded us why travel experiences like this are so special.

🌅 A Perfect Sonoma Day Trip
Our coastal adventure turned out to be one of the most memorable days of the entire trip. It was a refreshing contrast to the vineyard tours and tasting rooms and showed us another beautiful side of Sonoma County.
The combination of scenic driving, fascinating history, and a relaxing seaside lunch made this excursion the perfect day trip from Santa Rosa.
If you’re visiting Sonoma wine country, I highly recommend setting aside at least one day to explore the dramatic Sonoma Coast. The views alone are worth the drive.
