🚢 Arriving in Bergen: First Impressions
We arrived in Bergen, Norway just after 7 PM and checked into the beautiful Clarion Admiral Hotel, perfectly situated right on the waterfront. Even though it was cloudy and raining during our entire visit in Bergen, we were enchanted by the city — where historic charm and modern energy coexist along the harbor.
On one side lay Bryggen, the iconic waterfront of narrow, timber-framed buildings and former Hanseatic warehouses that make Bergen unmistakable. This area has stood for centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, emblematic of Bergen’s long trading past.
That night, we dined at a cozy waterfront restaurant, savoring warm, fresh flavors — a perfect welcome to Bergen’s burgeoning culinary scene.

👋 A Surprise Reunion & Delicious Harbour Lunch
Over breakfast the next morning, a heartwarming surprise unfolded: a long-lost Norwegian friend, Marie, and her daughter Ingrikristen had responded to an email I sent them days earlier letting her know we were heading to Norway with the date we were scheduled in Bergen. To our surprise, she had texted me overnight and said they were on their way from from Stavanger and would arrive around noon! That spontaneous reunion turned into one of the most memorable moments of our trip.
After they arrive, we sat in the Clarion’s lobby and caught up on over Twenty Five years of time that had passed since we last saw Marie. We had lots of laughs as we shared stories and photos of our families. But hunger started to set in so we went looking for some great Norwegian Sea Food.
We made our way to the Bergen Fish Market — located right along the harbor — where we feasted on seafood soup and fresh mussels while watching local life unfold against views of colorful boats and mountains beyond. Bergen’s harbor market is one of the best places in town to sample fresh North Sea seafood straight off the docks. We sat right on the harbor front and enjoyed a delicious meal, while we continued to re-connect with each other.
There is a lot to do around the harbor front area. You might find yourself attending engaging lectures on local history, culture, or wildlife, led by knowledgeable experts. These talks often deepen your appreciation of the places you’re about to visit — or have just explored — and add meaning to every shore excursion.

🐧 Bergen Aquarium — Penguins & Surprises
After lunch, our group headed to the Bergen Aquarium, a fun stop for families and animal lovers alike. We were delighted by Gentoo penguins, playful sea lions, and even unexpected white crocodiles — a quirky contrast to Norway’s cool marine climate. It was a great way to get out of the rain and have some fun with our friends.

🛳️ Boarding Viking Jupiter & Dinner Under the Midnight Sky
That afternoon, it was time to board our ship, the Viking Jupiter — the elegant ship that would carry us north on our Midnight Sun cruise. We felt an immediate sense of excitement and familiarity on the Neptune when we realized the Hotel Manager was Ron who also had his wife traveling with him. Ron was our hotel manager on the Neptune during our World Cruise and who took such good care of us when we had to depart early.
Dinner that evening featured fresh king crab and other Norwegian specialties — a fitting celebration before heading into the wide Arctic north. Later, a Norwegian violinist performed a blend of classical and folk melodies, accompanied by visuals of fjords, forests, and mountains — a beautiful soundtrack for our journey ahead.

🏛️ Guided Bergen Walking Tour: Old Meets New
The next day featured an included guided city tour, blending Bergen’s historic roots and contemporary culture before we set sail later that evening. Highlights included:
🏙️ Bryggen & Historic Alleys
Walk through the narrow alleyways of Bryggen’s old wooden buildings, filled with artisan galleries, gift shops, and cozy cafés — like stepping back into Bergen’s trading era.
⛪ Nykirken Luteran Church & Anglican Church
First we visited a Lutheran Church that was originally built in the 17th century, but destroyed by fire and an explosion in 1944. We toured below the church to the original structures underground. Most notable was the huge baptismal angel that is suspended from the ceiling. We also visited another Anglican church and toured past the Bargen Cathedral.

🎼 Musical Heritage
We learned about Norway’s rich musical heritage and more specifically, Edvard Grieg, the famous Norwegian composer whose works are woven into the cultural fabric of the city.

🚡 Mount Fløyen & Panoramic Views
Included in the tour was a recommendation to ride the Fløibanen funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen — one of Bergen’s seven surrounding mountains. From there, 360° views stretch from fjord to city to mountain peaks on a clear day.
🌿 A City of Seven Mountains & Natural Beauty
Bergen isn’t just an urban spot — it’s the gateway to Norway’s fjords and wrapped in dramatic nature. With seven mountains encircling the city, spectacular sea views and hiking trails are never far away. Many visitors explore further afield on fjord cruises that depart right from the harbor — a perfect addition to any Bergen itinerary.
