Downhill skiing is one of the most thrilling and exciting winter sports. It’s a great way to exercise and enjoy the great outdoors and beautiful winter scenery.
Downhill skiing is not only an excellent way to exercise but also a great opportunity to spend time with friends and family. My family and I have been downhill skiing for decades, starting in the northeast slopes of Vermont and then migrating west to the Rockies. Bob and I even took a ski trip to Switzerland during our early years. My son learned to ski before he was out of diapers, and our girls were skiing by the time they were five. Skiing is a great activity for the family and filled our winter vacations with lots of fun over the years. We still laugh at some of the crazy things that have happened to us while skiing.
In recent years, Bob has tapped out of skiing, but I still love to ski with my daughters each winter and still manage to keep up with them bombing the slopes.
My two daughters Daniell, Lori and I went on a long weekend trip to Park City Utah this past March. Bob and I had skied their decades ago, but it has triple in size since then and was a great ski moutain with the largest ski terrain in the US. Planning a trip for next year? Check out my Ski Experience at Park City post for inside information and great tips.
The gear and equipment that comes with downhill skiing have evolved significantly over the years. However, I still use my skis and boots from 2005 and have no problems with them. The initial expense of gearing up for skiing can be steep, but good equipment will last for many years.
One significant change that has made skiing safer is the development and use of ski helmets. Not only do they keep you safe, but they keep you warm as well. Almost everyone on the slope at Park City was wearing one this past year.
Skiing has continued to get more expensive over the years. As a result, it is costly to take a family of four skiing. However, there are many ways to keep the prices down to a manageable level, such as buying second-hand equipment for the kids and having it checked for safety and fit, bringing your food to the slopes, etc. Investing in Multi-day and multi-area passes like the Epic pass will also help you save a lot, especially if they are bought in early spring for the following season.
